GOSH Charity Driving Challenge 2003

November 18th saw 38 cars lined up at Brands Hatch for the start of this year's Great Ormond Street Charity Driving Challenge to Macon. An excellent turn out, for what proved to be a testing run for Shivs and me. We'd opted to take the Caterham, roof down, obviously, so we'd been preparing the car for some time, however, as always happens, the day before was panic stations!! A totally flat battery, left me struggling to find a replacement in time, so thanks to Rat Race Engineering for finding one on the morning of the trip.

Due to further challenges......we found ourselves on a later train than all the other competitors, but at least we had the company of Bertie, Emma-Jane, Chris and Kate, all marshals on the event....they were going to have to rush to get to their checkpoints in time for Tiff, he managed the whole trip in some fairly impressive time!

Being later than the other competitors caused us to hit traffic in Versailles, which led to us having to hit the Autoroute in order to make it in under the time barrier, pity, as we finished only 5 miles off the lead distance...Roll on next year, this competition needs a pair of loonies in an open top Caterham to win it!!

If you want copies of the pics, or would like to use them on your site or whatever, e-mail me.

A slight postal error meant we'd been given the number 39 stickers, so some careful scraping was needed to make us car 9, our official entry number.
Pretty, isn't she?
On the start line at Brands, there was an even wider range of machinery than at many trackdays...all tin tops though....Apart from....
Our hero David in a Healey. Mind you, his roof was up when we got to the hotel!!
The first checkpoint, this was the easy bit, the traffic was about to start getting heavier, and we struggled to get to the second checkpoint in time. Thanks to Bertie and Emma-Jane for hanging around for us!
Stopping to fill up, we made a friend ;-)
Not quite so pretty now :-) petrol consumption went up as we picked up half the French countryside on the car!
The tale of the tape....
Oh, alright then, here's a closer look, knock off the 48 miles from Brands to Folkestone, and we completed the route in 446 miles...
A celebratory drink for the launch of this year's fine Nouveau, cheers everyone!
The trip home, uneventful, but bloomin' cold...Brrrrrrrr!
